Rising oil prices are making us take  1 Dec 2008 Technology firms targeted oil from tar sands in Canada and from shale, a sedimentary rock abundant in the western United States. But in the

Oil shale is, in fact, organic marlstone containing kerogen, a waxy hydrocarbon. Like tar sands, it must be extensively processed to yield what we call oil. Writers and analysts abound who will cite astronomical figures for oil contained in America’s oil shale deposits which are found in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. With cutbacks emerging in all sectors within oil, the potential deaths of tar sands and U.S. shale operations could spell long-term disaster on a global scale Why The World Needs Both Shale Utah’s oil sand resource is the largest in the United States. The deposits are located mainly in two areas of Utah: the Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah, and central southeastern Utah. Oil sands or tar sands (also called oil-impregnated sandstones and bituminous sandstones) are, as the names imply, sandstones that are saturated or filled with black, heavy hydrocarbons or bitumen. To put it into perspective, the shale produces approximately 5.36 million barrels per day and the oil sands another 4 million barrels per day. Considering that the oversupply is only 2 million Oil sands are found worldwide, from Canada to Venezuela and, as you might imagine, in the Middle East. Alberta, Canada, has a booming oil-sand industry -- as many 1 million barrels of synthetic oil are produced there every day, 40 percent of which comes from oil sands [source: Oil Shale & Tar Sands Programmatic EIS Information Center ].

Oil Shale and Tar Sands Programmatic EIS Information Center: About Oil

Oil shale is a form of sedimentary rock that contains kerogen, which is released as a petroleum-like liquid when the rock is heated. Tar sands are a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen, which is a heavy hydrocarbon. Like the kerogen in oil shale, tar sands' bitumen can be upgraded to synthetic crude oil.

Tar sands are a fossil fuel resource. It is composed of sand, claw, water, and bitumen, which is an oil that is black and viscous. These sands can be mined, and then processed, to remove the bitumen. Once processed, then bitumen can be then refined into oil. Oil shale differs from bitumen-impregnated rocks (oil sands and petroleum reservoir rocks), humic coals and carbonaceous shale. While oil sands do originate from the biodegradation of oil, heat and pressure have not (yet) transformed the kerogen in oil shale into petroleum, that means that its maturation does not exceed early mesocatagenetic. Oil sands, crude bitumen, or more technically bituminous sands, are a type of unconventional petroleum deposit. Oil sands are either loose sands or partially consolidated sandstone containing a naturally occurring mixture of sand, clay, and water, soaked with a dense and extremely viscous form of petroleum technically referred to as bitumen. Natural bitumen deposits are reported in many countries, but in particular are found in extremely large quantities in Canada. Other large reserves are locat Tar sands are yet another major resource of almost solid oil. The recoverable crude oil from tar sands is about 0.4 trillion barrels. As for oil shales, there is little development of tar sands except in Alberta. Oil Shales. Oil shale is often a decorative, finely banded rock which has an aroma of petroleum when freshly broken or heated.
